We are proud to announce that Ms. Mary Melissa “Missy” Shores has been named the next Superintendent of Cumberland County Public Schools, effective July 1, 2025.
Ms. Shores has served as the Principal of Cumberland High School for the past two years. During her tenure, CHS has experienced notable growth in academics, athletics, student engagement, and community support. A dedicated leader, Ms. Shores understands the fabric of a rural community and the importance of fostering growth across all areas of a school system. She brings with her a deep, realistic understanding of what is achievable and the vision needed to move the division forward.
Dr. Chip Jones, current superintendent, shared, “I am excited about this new chapter for CuCPS. Ms. Shores is a committed and passionate leader, and I eagerly await the continued progression of the division under her leadership.”
Ms. Shores stated,
"As I move forward into this new role, I am both honored and excited. I deeply appreciate the support and belief in my leadership. It is truly an honor to serve as the leader in the community in which I live. I am blessed."
LaTesha Anderson, School Board Vice Chair, added,
"The Cumberland County School Board is proud to promote from within. Ms. Shores has demonstrated her commitment to our students, staff, and community. We believe in her vision and leadership, and we are excited to see CuCPS continue to thrive under her guidance."
Ms. Shores has held numerous roles in education, including:
Principal of Bluestone Middle School
Activities Director for Buckingham County Public Schools
Director of Personnel for Hopewell City Public Schools
Teacher, coach, and assistant principal at CHS
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education from Grove City College (PA) and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Longwood University. Ms. Shores is licensed in History and Social Sciences as well as Administration and Supervision.
Ms. Shores is a proud resident of Cartersville, Virginia, located in Cumberland County, and brings a strong personal investment in the success of the schools and the community she calls home.
