Good evening families of Cumberland Middle School and High School students. This is a reminder that tomorrow, Wednesday, March 25, the middle and high school will begin the implementation of OpenGate Weapon Detection systems. If students are being dropped off at school, we ask that those students use the middle school entrance. Students who drive or ride buses should use the bus loop entrance. Doors will not open until 7:15.

While the system is designed to allow students to walk through without fully divesting their bags, items such as Chromebooks, laptops, and tablets (iPads) should be removed and handed to a staff member at the entry point before passing through the pillars. Additionally, students should remove three-ring binders with metal rings, metal lunchboxes, umbrellas, and metal pencil or eyeglass cases, as the density of these objects often mimics the signature of a prohibited item.

Following these instructions will ensure a smoother process. Please see the attached picture of a staff member demonstrating how backpacks can be worn—both straps on the shoulders carried on the chest, back, or both.
