On Friday, February 2, 2024, join CCES in turning our blue and gold into RED in honor of Ms. Judy Scruggs. The first Friday in February is the day to wear red and help raise awareness of women's No. 1 killer – cardiovascular disease (goredforwomen.com). Thank you to Ms. Grubbs for arranging this event. Take a moment and read Ms. Scruggs story and remember--let's see all RED on Friday, Feb. 2, 2024. The story below was shared with permission from Ms. Scruggs. " Tuesday, June 20, 2023, started out as a normal work day for me. I was feeling fine. About mid-day, I ran my usual errands for the school, still feeling fine. When I got back in the car from my last stop, all at once my chest started to hurt and my upper right back. I thought I had indigestion, so I drove to the store to get tums and took ibuprofen for my back pain. It was time for my lunch break, so I decided to go home and lay down for a while until my break ended. When I got home, the pain had worsened, I'm thinking to myself this pain feels different than indigestion, so I immediately took two aspirins and called my daughter. She stayed on the phone with me and told me to check my blood pressure, it was high. She said "Mom call 911 NOW!! I was taken to Westchester Emergency Room by ambulance. They immediately took me back and completed all types of tests, and found out I had a mini heart attack. They had to admit me, so I was transported to St. Francis Hospital. The next day they did a Coronary Angiogram, which is a test to examine the large vessels of your heart. They inserted a thin flexible tube into a blood vessel through my wrist to determine if I had a blockage. They said if I had a blockage, they would have to put a stent in, but praise God, the result came back, and I didn't have a blockage. I did have a heart attack, with non-obstructive CAD, which is plaque buildup in the arteries and it narrows the arteries, this slows oxygenated blood flow to the heart which raises the risk of a heart attack. I stayed in the hospital for two days, was released with medications to take daily, eat properly balanced meals and exercise, and try to be stress free as much as possible. I followed up with my cardiology doctor and my regular doctor three weeks after the hospital stay, everything was looking good. I now go for follow up every 6 months. I returned to work after three weeks, and my home and work place is back to normal. But, my family and I make sure that I am taking my medications, eating properly and getting the exercise I need mentally and physically. My advice to everyone that I learned from this experience is ... if you experience chest pains, take it very seriously, do not put it off, go get it checked out. It could be a matter of life or death. I am blessed that my daughter encouraged me to call 911 right away, because I never thought I was having a heart attack. This is my story, and I thank God I am here to tell it. Judy
