Congratulations to Emily E. for being accepted into the Virginia Governor's German Language Academy, a three week full immersion camp sponsored by the VDOE at Washington & Lee University for summer 2024. According to Mr. Kesner, "The courses being taught this year (entirely in German) will be "Optics and Waves," "Black Germans in Today's Society," "Japanese Language," "Academy Transitions" (taught by me! :)), and "Modern Literary Remarks". She will also take part in a project based learning course of her choosing, though those are not yet determined but can range from orchestra to soccer team to theater to podcast.
The World Language Academies were founded in 1987, and Emily is to my knowledge the first student in Cumberland's entire history to be accepted into the program for any language. Please offer her a huge congratulations. Only 45 students from the entire state of Virginia are accepted. Districts like Loudon, Chesterfield, and Fairfax generally make up a massive portion of those accepted. Students representing rural school districts are extremely rare. In addition, the majority of the applicants will have just completed German IV and be preparing to enroll in IB German or AP German. She will only be finishing German III when she starts. This is a huge deal." Go Dukes! #WeAreCuCPS
