
📣 Cumberland High School Names New Assistant Principal 📣
Cumberland County Public Schools is excited to announce Mr. Nathan King as the new Assistant Principal of Cumberland High School for the upcoming school year.
Mr. King brings a background in education and communications. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast Journalism/Electronic Media from Appalachian State University and a Master of Education degree in Administration and Supervision from Virginia State University. He holds a Virginia teaching license with endorsements in English 6–12 and Administration and Supervision PreK–12.
Mr. King most recently served as a teacher at New HOPE Academy and currently works as the Co-Administrator of the New Direction Night School and Intersession Coordinator for Hopewell City Public Schools. He previously taught photojournalism and advised the yearbook at Bluestone High School for three years and served as the sports editor for The Farmville Herald for fourteen years.

Even though the school year is over, our Dukes athletes are putting in the work and getting ready for the upcoming season! Off-season conditioning is underway:
📅 Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
📅 Saturdays: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
📍 First day of tryouts/practice is July 31—mark your calendar!

🚨 Exciting Leadership News from Cumberland Middle School! 🚨
Cumberland County Public Schools is proud to announce Mr. Michael Hill as the new Assistant Principal of CMS! 🎉
With over 30 years of experience in education, Mr. Hill has served students in grades 5–12 across all core content areas. His career includes teaching in traditional classrooms, co-teaching environments, gifted education, and the International Baccalaureate program. He’s also spent four years in school administration, focusing on instructional leadership and positive school culture.
Mr. Hill has already been making a difference at CMS as a math teacher, and now he’s stepping into this new leadership role to continue supporting students, staff, and families.
💬 “I am truly honored to continue serving the Cumberland community in this new role,” says Mr. Hill. “I’m committed to working with our amazing staff to create a safe, inclusive, and inspiring learning environment for every student.”

Cumberland Elementary School’s own Sadie F. took home GOLD in the girls’ 9–10 age group division of the 1500-meter race/walk on Sunday, June 8th at Christopher Newport University! 🥇
With a #3 national ranking, Sadie is headed to the USATF Region 3 Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, NC (June 26–29) to compete among the best.

Cumberland High School Names Dr. Elif Kalemdaroglu-Wheeler as Principal
Cumberland County Public Schools is pleased to announce that Dr. Elif Kalemdaroglu-Wheeler has been selected as the next principal of Cumberland High School, effective July 1, 2025. Dr. Wheeler has served as Assistant Principal at CHS since September 2024 and brings over 25 years of experience in education to her new role.
Dr. Wheeler holds a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts with concentrations in Political Science and Economics and a Minor in Business. She earned both her B.A. and M.A. in Leadership in Education from the University of Notre Dame of Maryland. She also received a Post-Master’s Certification in Educational Leadership and Administration from George Washington University and holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership with a specialization in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Phoenix. She is currently pursuing a Master’s of Jurisprudence in Education Law and Special Education Advocacy from St. Mary’s University School of Law.
Throughout her career, Dr. Wheeler has served as a teacher of Special Education, Social Studies, and Science at both the middle and high school levels and has held numerous leadership positions, including Department Chair, Behavior Intervention Coordinator, Dean of Students, Athletic Director, Instructional Coach, Head of Academy, and Director of Virtual Curriculum and Instruction. She is also a Fellow in Residence with both the Center for Leadership Studies and Organizational Research and the Center for Educational and Instructional Technology Research at the University of Phoenix.
“It is an honor to take on this new role and continue working with incredibly talented individuals while witnessing the progress of our students,” said Dr. Wheeler. “I am deeply honored to be a part of the Duke community, and I eagerly anticipate the continued growth and strength of our partnership.”
Incoming Superintendent and current CHS Principal Ms Missy Shores stated, “Dr. Wheeler is a thoughtful and experienced instructional leader who has already contributed so much to our school. I am excited to see her step into this role and continue to lead CHS with a student-centered vision. Securing our administrative team is a top priority, and I am confident this transition will support continued success at the high school.”
Outgoing Superintendent Dr. Chip Jones added, “I am thrilled to see Ms. Shores building a strong leadership team as she prepares to take the reins of the division. Having Dr. Wheeler in place at CHS will ensure continuity and stability. Her experience and familiarity with our school community make her the ideal choice to lead the Dukes forward.”
