Congratulations to the CMS Dukes baseball team! Take a moment to read the message that Coach Nelson sent out! Powerful...just makes you smile! Great Evening!!!! First of all I want to thank everyone who came out to an amazing back and forth 10 to 7 WIN at home against Prince Edward. This truly is a spectacular PROGRAM WIN! ALL of our players contributed to a total TEAM WIN. A couple highlights below are: The players were up in the dugout the entire game cheering on their teammates and being ready at a moment's notice to pinch run (Thank you Brock Sullivan!!!!) for an injured teammate. Great job taking that pitch like a boss and getting us a runner on base Kavion Randolph...who later said, it didn't hurt that much!!!!! Defensive Web Gems were at 3rd base with James Wenzel, 2nd Base with Ryan Wise and first base by Logan Elliott!!! These young men were constantly gathering the ball and making the best play! I'm sure these guys will end up on SportsCenter tonight!!!! Our defensive outfield was constantly shifting with the batters and always ready to back up our infielders. These players were Josh Redford, Owen Gold, Noah Lemle, Dalton Harris and Iziah Brown! Don't blink or you might miss our players flying around the field. Pinch hitters were ready to take their cuts and work the count to get the opposing pitcher in stressful situations. This includes great at bats from Will Long and Shawn Price! Our bats went from smoldering to ON FIRE adding five runs in the second inning and four runs in the 5th inning to give our pitchers a healthy lead going into what would be the last half inning. Davy Sullivan, Josh Redford and Owen Gold each were hitting stingers which kept our chances alive at crucial times in the game and Brett Dalton's bat was smoking as he went 3 for 3 in the game. These runs allowed our pitchers to take command of the game by controlling every pitch. Brett Dalton pitched 4 1/3 innings sitting down 9 batters via strikeout. Bryson Robison, who was a BRICK WALL behind the plate as catcher and then added 2 strikeouts of his own as he pitched 1 and 2/3rds innings to close out the game. This was a TOTAL TEAM EFFORT in the WIN with everyone on the fence in the dugout cheering on OUR team to victory! The building and rebuilding of this program is coming along in a great way and I couldn't be more proud of our players. I would also like to thank all the family members of the team who support us and deal with Coach Ronemus and myself. We truly couldn't have the success we have had and the growth from the players without you. This program owes a lot to our Transportation Department led by the always supportive Coach Bell! He is constantly making different arrangements for us to get exactly where we need to be as soon as possible! Our Athletic Director Mr. Travis Gilliam who provides an immaculate field for us to play on as well as listening to and giving advice on all the day to day operations of ALL our sports teams. Our administration Mr. Hoyt and Mr. Mawyer who give Coach Ronemus and myself the encouragement we need as well as the encouragement to our players. They are the "Harry Hogge and Buck Bretherton" of this finely tuned machine...and finally to all the Middle School Staff members who encourage our players on a day in day out basis to be better students, players and young men in our always changing world. I appreciate all of you and this is as much a win for you as it is the team. Finally I want to thank Coach Ronemus for his time, effort, and many answers to text, phone calls, "crazy ideas" and listening to my "whaddya think about this...." This is a HUGE MOMENT for our PROGRAM and I would please encourage our players to continue to work hard throughout this season. We hope to see some of you at our game against Amelia in Amelia on Wednesday. (weather permitting) Thank you all for your continued support and for my late night ranting and raving!!! I couldn't be MORE PROUD of a team! I know we still have a lot of season to get though and we have a lot of learning left to do BUT it's a GREAT NIGHT TO BE A DUKE!!!

Our CCES students are amazing! According to Ms. Overstreet, "We love being inspired by children's books in art! Giraffes Can’t Dance is an important story for teaching children friendship and the fact that it’s great to be different and dance to our own tune. I think K and 1st grade did a beautiful job." Thank you for Ms. Overstreet and students for continuing to promote the love of reading. @CuCPS #ccesdukes #iamcucps

Layla earned a Positive Duke Shoutout for being Kind. She saw one of our custodians struggling with a large load and immediately went to her to offer assistance. Her kindness didn’t go unnoticed so a #GoodNewsCalloftheDay was in order! #ccesdukes #iamcucps

Charlottesville, Virginia (3/11/2022) – QuickStart Tennis of Central Virginia, Inc. (QCV) is pleased to report the preschoolers at Cumberland Elementary School in Cumberland County recently received a third book, Pete the Cat Snow Daze, to add to their home libraries. This is the second year Cumberland preschoolers have received books and giveaways from Racquets for Reading!!!. The giveaways this year are made possible by a generous grant from Weyerhaeuser and the support of Ben Kobek, Virginia Area Manager for Weyerhaeuser. Early Childhood Special Education teacher Kathy McCutcheon says, “Pete the Cat for the win! Abbie [shown above] gives a big thumbs up for the newest book in her home library. Pete the Cat may bring on smiles from our pre-kindergarteners in Cumberland but QuickStart Tennis and their love for our children makes me smile. With every book distribution we hear from our families how appreciative they are for each and every book they receive. So many of these children have younger siblings so these books will be loved for many years to come. Once again, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for loving and believing in our children.” Lynda Harrill, QuickStart Coordinator, adds, “We love working with the folks at Cumberland Elementary and have for many years now. They know how to maximize the resources they have, are great community partners and always put a big smile on my face. It’s a pure pleasure to work with them.
