Way to go CuCPS Robotics Team! Update from Coach Giles...Cumberland's FIRST Robotics Competition team #6194, the Aftershocks, finished second this weekend at Blacksburg High School's regional qualifier. After 67 qualification matches, the Aftershocks teamed up with TORCH, from Collegiate School in Richmond, and "That One Team," from Belmont, Michigan, to make up the #3 seed alliance for elimination matches. The #3 seed cruised through the first three rounds of the semi-finals, securing the high score for the entire weekend and a place in the finals. The semi-finals are a double elimination bracket and the #3 seed was able to send the #1 seed to the bottom bracket.
The #1 seed (The Blair Robot Project from Silver Spring, Maryland; KoiBots from Arlington, Virginia; and LYNK from Forest City, North Carolina) fought their way back through the bottom bracket to meet #3 in the finals, a best of 3 matchup. The Aftershocks/TORCH/That One Team alliance experienced mechanical issues in back to back losses to the Blair/KoiBot/LYNK alliance and finished second for the weekend. All students earned medals for being finalists, and the Aftershocks received a trophy and a plaque.
I want to give special shout-outs to the team members who participated this weekend:
Robot Driver and Team Captain, Dominique Holman
Safety Captain, Victor Cruz-Araujo
Robot Manager/Transporter, Brooke DeVore
Lead Robot Technician, Noah Eroh
Apprentice Robot Technicians, Jaiden Ashby and Dominick Childress
Team Scouter, Julia Roberts
and the team is coached by Jack Giles and Evan Jones, with assistance from Margaret Dawson #WeAreCuCPS
