Cumberland County High School girls won the 2026 VHSL Class 1 Girls Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday at James Madison University. They were paced by 6 young ladies: Jayla Augustin, Ma’Kiya Hawkins, Nevaeha Hobson, Aaliyah Minter (present in spirit/ injured), Lucy Stone, and Daryn Woodson-Trent.

Cumberland led day 1 with 23 points from Daryn Woodson-Trent, 3rd place discus, Nevaeha Hobson, 3rd place triple jump, Ma’Kiya Hawkins, 2nd place pole vault, and Lucy Stone, 7th place pole vault. 

Day 2, Cumberland girls accumulated their remaining championship points with Jayla Augustin winning the shot put, Ma’kiya Hawkins in 3rd place in the long jump. With the constant exchange of nip and tuck scoring between Cumberland, Auburn, and North Hampton, the lady Dukes had to rely on scoring from only two young ladies: Ma’Kiya Hawkins 4th place 400 meters, 5th place 200 meters, Nevaeha Hobson 7th place 100 meters, along with 4th place finishes in 300 meter hurdles and 200 meters sealed the championship with Cumberland and North Hampton tied at 51 points, the lady dukes capitalized by scoring 9 points in the 200 meters.

Cumberland boys finished 12th, led by 3rd place 4x400 relay, 4th place 4x100 relay with teams of Azzari Patterson, Deonta Bartee, Ryan Fernandez, Xavier Booker, and Harland Patterson. Bartee and A. Patterson finished 4th and 5th, respectively, in the triple jump.

Cumberland track and field coaches were named the girls' state coaching staff of the year.
