Cumberland Middle School eighth graders were encouraged to “Dream Big!” during an exciting Future Shield activity led by GEAR UP Coordinator Dr. Tracey A. Wade.

As part of the GEAR UP Longwood initiative, students participated in a hands-on activity designed to inspire them to think about their futures and recognize the strengths and values that will help them achieve their dreams.

Using personalized Future Shields featuring the Cumberland Duke mascot and school colors, students identified their future educational and career goals, personal strengths, core values, hobbies, and support systems. The activity encouraged students to reflect on who they are today while envisioning who they hope to become.

Eighth-grade teachers were on hand to encourage and support students as they thoughtfully completed their shields, reinforcing the importance of setting goals, believing in themselves, and planning for success.

The message was simple but powerful: Dream Big, Work Hard, and Believe in Your Future!

Through its partnership with Longwood University, GEAR UP will continue providing Cumberland's Class of 2031 with opportunities, resources, and guidance as they prepare for high school, college, careers, and beyond.
