The Cumberland County School Board expressed its formal appreciation to employees of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) during its regular August 2026 meeting. The Board recognized the state road crews for their essential role in clearing primary corridors, neighborhood routes, and school bus turning loops during winter storms during the previous school year, which minimized disruptions to the academic calendar.
When winter weather hits the region, ensuring the safety of student transit is a primary hurdle for school administrators. Heavy snow accumulation and lingering icy conditions can quickly create dangerous driving hazards for drivers. Thanks to the coordinated efforts between local school officials and VDOT’s local crews, VDOT’s priority clearing of high-volume primary routes and systematic opening of secondary neighborhood streets and school zones allowed school staff crews to focus their own efforts on clearing school parking lots and walkways. This coordinated effort allowed schools to reopen safely with minimal loss of instructional time.
During the recognition portion of the meeting, Board members presented certificates of appreciation to attending VDOT representatives, highlighting the long-standing interagency partnership that prioritizes student safety. Present to receive their certificates were Mitch Crickenberger, Jay Marion , and Mike Stevens.
Transportation Coordinator Alfonso Bell stated, "Safe transportation is our top priority whenever severe weather impacts our area. The dedication shown by VDOT crews—often working through freezing conditions—ensures that our school buses, staff, and student drivers can return to campuses safely as soon as the weather clears."
