Congratulations to Mr. Longenecker for being named the 2025 Virginia History Teacher of the Year by Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History! Mr. Longenecker is one of fifty-three finalists for the National History Teacher of the Year Award. We are so proud of Mr. Longenecker and happy to call him a DUKE!

Lewis Longenecker teaches at Cumberland Middle School and serves as the History Master Teacher for Cumberland County Public Schools. Longenecker, a Bethany College (WV) graduate, has taught World Geography, Virginia/United States History, Civics and Economics and United States History II throughout his 20 year-plus teaching career. He served five years as an Assistant Wrestling Coach and three years as the Head Wrestling Coach for Cumberland High School. In recent years, has developed curricula for Library of Virginia, Virginia Humanities, Virginia School Consortium for Learning, New American History and AMMD Pine Grove Project. He and his wife Casey, along with their three children, reside in Appomattox.
