Updates/Information about Coronavirus (COVID-19)

CuCPS Family Update: Friday, May 22, 2020:

We enjoyed seeing those of you that were able to participate in the Send off to Summer Salute yesterday and are sorry that we missed some of you.

Report cards and end of year certificates are being mailed home today, so please be on the lookout. Summer School will be held June 15 - July 17. The majority will be conducted through remote learning. You should be hearing specifically from your child’s school about Summer School as well as summer reading for all students in elementary and middle schools.

We will continue the weekly food distribution and delivery throughout the summer months. Due to Monday being Memorial Day, our next food distribution and delivery will be on Tuesday, May 26, 2020.

The Class of 2020 Virtual Graduation will be shown on Tuesday, May 26, at 6:00 p.m. Please see our website or Facebook for the link to the event.

We hope everyone has a wonderful summer. Please continue to practice social distancing and follow COVID-19 prevention behaviors so we can physically get back to school as soon as possible. Have a safe and healthy Memorial Day Weekend!

CuCPS Family Update: Friday, May 15, 2020:

The school year is winding down with the official last day of learning for the 2019-2020 school year being on Thursday, May 21, 2020. The Class of 2020 would have graduated this evening at 7:00 p.m. Sadly, we are unable to have our traditional graduation this evening; however, a virtual graduation will take place on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. You can view the event on our website, Facebook page, or on YouTube. A traditional graduation ceremony will take place this fall on Saturday, October 10, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. in the high school gym as long as social gatherings are allowed at that time. We are so proud of the Class of 2020. I know they will go on to do great things in the future.

Reminders for the upcoming week include:

  • The next weekly food distribution and delivery is on Monday, May 18, 2020. Weekly food distribution will continue during the summer.
  • Summer School 2020 planning is underway. It will be held June 15-July 18, 2020. More information will be coming soon.
  • Report Cards and end of year certificates will be mailed home on Friday, May 22, 2020.

My last weekly family update for the 2019-2020 school year will be next Friday. I will make announcements and alerts as needed following next Friday. I hope everyone is staying safe, healthy, and at home. We all must continue social distancing and following COVID-19 prevention behaviors so we can get back into school buildings in the fall. Have a great weekend. We love and miss you!

CuCPS Family Update: Friday, May 8, 2020:

The next weekly student food distribution/delivery will be on Monday, May 11, 2020. Because of the COVID-19 crisis, additional benefits have been identified for some of our CuCPS families. Under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act of 2020 (FFCRA), designated families will soon receive food funds through Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfers (EBT). All elementary and middle school students will be eligible to receive funds because CuCPS participates in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) meal service program. Further, all high school students that are on a free or reduced meal plan also will be eligible to receive funds. This is a one-time supplemental program and funding will not be ongoing. Families will receive, via the US Postal Service, EBT debit cards along with a FAQ sheet regarding the program beginning mid-May. The Department of Social Services will be handling all funds, cards and undeliverable cards.

CuCPS Update: Friday, April 3, 2020

This week, elementary students should have received their new learning packets by mail. Information regarding new middle and high school learning packets or modules will be available on Monday, April 6, 2020. If you need any assistance in accessing the materials or with the content, please contact your child’s teacher, school principal, or myself. We don’t want remote learning to be burdensome for families.

We are honoring Spring Break for CuCPS faculty and staff. Students and families may continue remote learning or take a mental break for themselves. Therefore, during the week of April 13-17, 2020, CuCPS faculty and staff will not be answering phone calls, emails, social media, etc. I hope you understand that our staff members need this time for their health and well-being. While they have not been in the school buildings, they have been juggling many things such as planning for a new way of learning for our students, worried about our children and families, and balancing a new home lifestyle.

Some reminders include:

  • The next distribution and delivery for school breakfasts and lunches will be on Monday, April 6, 2020. Students will receive four days of meals.
  • CuCPS Story Time is held every weekday on our Facebook page and website. Each story is archived on these sites as well.
  • There are some neat activities on various CuCPS social media platforms such as fitness challenges, art lessons, and music by Mr. Archer.
  • The FAQ document continues to be updated and can be found on Facebook and our website.

We know that this is a difficult time for everyone. We are here for you. Please reach out to a staff member or myself if you need anything. Our phone number is 492-4212 and my email is agriffin@cucps.k12.va.us. Have a good weekend. Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay home.

Friday, March 27, 2020 (Letter being mailed on Monday, March 30)

Dear CuCPS Families:

I hope everyone is safe and healthy. I wanted to provide you with updates on how we are moving forward as a CuCPS family and community.

As of right now, CuCPS school buildings and offices are closed. Luckily, student breakfast and lunch distribution/delivery and learning will continue. If you need to contact administration, teachers, or a staff member, the best way is through email. Email addresses can be found on our CuCPS webpage. If this is not possible, you can call 804-492-4212 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on weekdays. This number will be answered by Mrs. Sandra Raymond remotely. She will get your messages to the correct people. We are here to answer your questions. We know this is a time of uncertainty and we want to assist in relieving any stress and anxiety that we possibly can.

Seniors, I know you are anxious and disappointed about the way the senior year has ended. To alleviate any fears, please know this -- if you were on track to graduate on Friday, March 13, 2020, you will be graduating this May. We do have a request from you regarding senior projects that I hope you will commit to and follow through on. You will hear more from Mr. Williams about this in days to come. We will hold a commencement ceremony when it is safe to do so.

For those seniors who were not on track to graduate by Friday, March 13, you will be contacted by the high school administration on what work needs to be completed in order to graduate.

As for high school students who are not seniors and are failing a course, you will also be contacted by the high school administration on what work needs to be completed in order to pass the course.

Governor’s School and Dual Enrollment students will also have specific work that must be completed in order to receive dual enrollment credit. If you haven’t already, you will be hearing more from your teachers.

In regards to all other CuCPS students, nongraded learning packets and modules will continue for the remainder of the school year. Parents and guardians, please know this -- we feel it is important for students to continue learning throughout the school closure; there tends to be a loss of skills previously learned when they are not practiced or used. If at any time this becomes too much -- take a break from it, reach out for assistance from teachers and administrators, or let us assist your child with the work when we return. However, the last suggestion is not recommended.

Students and families should expect the following from each school:

  • CCES: A two week packet was mailed out today. CCES will provide additional learning experiences following that time period.
  • CMS and CHS: New learning modules will be provided on April 6, 2020.

Additional information will be forthcoming concerning the availability of electronic devices for those in need and wireless hotspots within the community for those without Internet access.

We continue to offer student breakfast and lunch meals at the three distribution centers and to provide delivery. The time to request a delivery has changed to between 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. We are reviewing our meal distribution/delivery process and may make changes soon. We will keep you informed of this.

A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document with this information and more will be included on our website.

As always, thank you for being understanding, patient, and flexible during this time. We love and miss all of our students, staff, and families. Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay home!

Tuesday, March 24, 2020:

Good Morning, CuCPS Family. There are a lot of unknowns regarding how CuCPS will proceed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. Although our school buildings are closed, student learning is to continue. We will learn more from the Virginia Department of Education today on the expectations on how to proceed. Please be patient as we learn the expectations and then plan and prepare for remote learning.

We hope to have answers for you by Friday and develop a Frequently Asked Questions document for our staff, families, and the community as a reference. However, I can tell you now that we are committed to providing breakfast and lunch meals to our students for the remainder of the school year and will still hold prom and graduation ceremony for the Class of 2020 when it is safe to do so.

My thoughts and prayers go out to each student, family, and staff member as we navigate through this time. We are here for you. If you need something, please reach out to me at 492-4212 or through email at agriffin@cucps.k12.va.us

Monday, March 23, 2020:

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Northam has decided to close all public and private schools until the end of the school year.

We are promised that the Virginia Department of Education will provide guidance to all divisions in our efforts to provide continuity of instruction and food services during this time. Other areas on which we are to be given prompt guidance include:

Graduation Requirements

Awarding Standard Credit and Verified Credit (in the absence of SOL testing)

Closing the instructional gaps created by the loss of instruction.

As these and many more questions are answered in the next few days, weeks, and months to come, I will make every effort to maintain communication with all our stakeholders.

I understand these are uncertain times for us all. The decisions being made are unprecedented and there is no script to follow. However, I have no doubt we will get through this together, and we will come through this on the other side stronger, and more prepared to take on any future challenges.

Be on the lookout for further information coming. In the meantime — stay safe, stay healthy, and stay home.

Thursday, March 19, 2020:

Backpacks of Love food bags will be distributed with breakfast and lunch meals tomorrow, Friday, March 20, 2020. We appreciate our partnership with Backpacks of Love!

On Monday, March 23rd, books will be distributed with breakfast and lunch meals. We appreciate the Virginia Children's Book Festival for donating books for our children!

Monday, March 16, 2020:

CuCPS is closed today and at a minimum through Friday, March 27, 2020. We continue to monitor information coming from the CDC as well as state and local officials. As of right now, our plans are as follows:

  • Breakfast and lunch bags for CuCPS students will be available each weekday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at three locations: the Randolph Fire Department, in front of CMS, and at the Cartersville Rescue Squad building. We do not want to have a social gathering, so distribution will be done in a drive-through manner. You will not need to get out of your car. We will bring the bagged meals to you. We ask that you keep the drive-through lines moving.
  • (Update) We are establishing a food delivery process for families that cannot get to one of the three distribution sites. We prefer participation in the drive-thru process at one of the distribution sites (Randolph Fire Department, front of CMS, and Cartersville Rescue Squad building) from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon; however, we do understand that some families or childcare providers are unable to get to the sites. If you are unable to get to a distribution site, please call your child’s school at 492-4212 between the hours of 2:00-3:00 p.m. and request a delivery for the next day. We will arrange meal delivery. Again, we prefer distribution through the drive-thru process; however, we do understand that this is not possible for all families. It is our hope to provide meals for every student at Cumberland County Public Schools and we encourage each family to participate.
  • Learning packets will be mailed home on Wednesday. Please be on the lookout for your child’s packet. Your child’s Report Card will be included in the packet.

As information evolves, plans may change. Thank you for being understanding, patient, and flexible. Stay safe and healthy.

March 13, 2020 Update:

Governor Northam has just ordered all schools to be closed for a minimum of two weeks. CuCPS will be closed from March 16, 2020, to March 27, 2020.

We will keep in touch with families through our alert system, webpage, and social media throughout this time period in regards to instructional and food services for our students.

I encourage everyone to stay home and practice germ prevention. You can find resources from the CDC on our website. Everyone be safe and we will miss you.

March 12, 2020 Update:

Important Date Change: The Professional Development/Teacher Workday scheduled for Friday, March 20, 2020, is being changed to Monday, March 16, 2020. Currently, we do not plan to close schools but do want to be prepared for the possibility. Teachers will use this day to prepare instructional services in the event CuCPS must close for 14 days or more due to coronavirus prevention or outbreak. On Tuesday, March 17, 2020, teachers will prepare students for learning expectations at home in the event this is needed. I would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience, understanding, and flexibility.
