Cumberland County Public Schools held a New Teacher Institute for all teachers new to the school division. The Institute was held on Monday, July 31, 2017, and August 1, 2017. New teachers received an introduction to CUCPS, had an opportunity to view their classrooms and meet with their administrators, were issued laptops, were given an overview of technology resources, were assigned mentors, and were taken on a tour of the County. New teachers also participated in the Opening of School Mini Conference, held on Thursday, August 3, 2017.
CES Students to Receive Free Meals
Cumberland Elementary School (CES) announced that the school will provide free meals for all students for the 2017-2018 school year. CES currently participates in the National School Lunch and Breakfast program, but has now met the eligibility requirements for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) as outlined in the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Therefore, students enrolled in CES will be provided a nutritious meal for breakfast and lunch each day at no charge to the household.
Parents/Guardians of Cumberland Elementary School students no longer need to complete applications for free and reduced price lunches, because eligibility is determined by using data from community assistance programs (such as Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Programs, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and Medicaid). Each household will receive a letter containing information about the program, including contact information for any questions. Each school, as well as the school nutrition office, has a copy of the program, which may be reviewed by any interested party.
Participation in this program not only eliminates the need for parents to complete meal application forms, but ensures that all students, regardless of their economic situation, will receive two nutritious meals each day. This will assist in reducing the child-hunger issue common in rural central Virginia.
