The School Board of Cumberland County Public Schools recommended that two reporters be added to the 2018 Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Media Honor Roll. The VSBA recognizes the important role that reporters play in public education. School divisions rely on responsible reporting by local media representatives to provide the community with timely information about division initiatives and programs as well as events that are going on in schools. The VSBA Media Honor Roll, which is released each fall, was created to recognize fair and balanced reporting about schools and Virginia’s public education system. Media representatives recommended for inclusion on the Honor Roll must demonstrate reporting of school news that is fair and accurate, make an effort to know the mission and goals of the school division, and give high-profile position to good news about schools.
The two reporters serving the Cumberland Community who were added to the list for 2018 included Ms. Emily Hollingsworth of the Farmville Herald and Ms. Laura McFarland of Cumberland Today. They were recognized by the School Board members at the August 13, 2018, meeting.
Ms. Laura McFarland was presented with her Certificate of Recognition for being added to the VSBA Media Honor Roll at the August meeting of the Cumberland School Board.
