At the May 8, 2017 meeting of the Cumberland School Board, Students of the Month were recognized:
- Kaylah Paras, the daughter of Howard and Tiffany Paras of Cumberland, was presented as the Valedictorian of the Class of 2017. She plans to attend Brown University in Rhode Island in the fall where she will major in International Relations or Business, Entrepreneurship, and Organizations. After obtaining her Bachelor’s degree, she plans to attend law school and become an attorney.
- John Jefferies, the son of John and Angela Jefferies of Columbia, was presented as the Salutatorian. He will be attending Virginia Tech and plans to major in Computer Science. His ultimate career goal is to become a software engineer and create operating software for a California company such as Apple, Microsoft, or Google.
- Fifth grader Juniper Ludgate, the daughter of Pamela and Joshua Ludgate, was the Student of the Month for Cumberland Middle School. She says that when she finishes school, she aspires to become a farmer, specifically a produce farmer, but one who has lots of animals, including cows, horses, pigs, sheep, and goats.
- Roger Jamerson, who is a first grader and the son of Roger and Crystal Jamerson, was presented at the Student of the Month for Cumberland Elementary School. He says he likes learning about history, reading, and playing outside. He said he looks forward to becoming a great reader and getting to read even bigger chapter books.
