At the meeting held on March 13, 2017, the members of the Cumberland School Board recognized the accomplishment of the spring athletic teams. Members of the Girls Varsity Basketball Team were recognized for being the first ever Girls Basketball Team to win the Conference 42 tournament and making it to State Championship at Bristol. Members of the Girls Varsity Basketball Team (State Qualifiers) included the following: Bria Anderson, Jasmine Blanton, A’Mia Booker, Tayziana Booker, Kiara Cokely, Nadia Elasha, Tonisha Ford, Lorraine Foster, Sadé Gregory, Ty’Esha Hatcher, Nikki Hurt, Imani Ingalls, Angel Parran, Diamonasia Rose, Olivia Sims, and Ruby Yarborough.
The members of the Cumberland High School Wrestling Team were also recognized. Two members of the Wrestling Team went to 1A State competition at Salem. Raheem Rumsey placed third and Trevon Foster (who was a state finalist last year) placed fourth. Ricky Kirby and Davidrick Brooks also attended the VHSL Wrestling Championship this year, and according to Mr. Jeffrey Scales, “They represented CHS very well.”
Finally, the members of the Indoor Track Team were recognized for their outstanding season. Several runners competed in the 2A VHSL State Indoor Track meet held at Roanoke College. The 4x800 Relay Team, which included Matthew Bapties, Chase Grubbs, Jared Halvorsen, and Devon Rivera-Reed, finished second in the state. Members of the Indoor Track Team included Christian Allen, Matthew Bapties, Keyshawn Diming, Charles Grubbs, Jared Halvorsen, Jonathan Lagos, Darron Ridley, and Devon Rivera-Reed.
Attending the School Board meeting to be recognized included Lorraine Foster (Girls Basketball), Chase Grubbs (Indoor Track), Travon Foster (Wrestling), and Nadia Elasha (Girls Basketball).
